The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

the invention of wingsThis is the fictionalised account of the life of Sarah Grimke, an abolitionist and the slave she is given aged 11, Handful/Hetty. The novel charts the often uneasy friendship between the two girls and their struggle for different forms of freedom.

I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone. The events often seem surreal yet they are based at least partly on real events. The author really conveys the unusual relationship between the two girls, and the struggles they must overcome.
